Me: I tried to catch it, but it was too fast.
Paul: (Incredulous look, supressing a giggle)
Me: What?! Slugs are fast!
I read somewhere recently a quote about gardening. The general gist: I became a gardener when I allowed the plants do what they wanted. Ugh. My brain knows this to be true, but my stubborn side doesn't want to believe.
Jackie's coached me to observe time of day and levels of sunlight... which requires patience. She (and others) have advised waiting this first year to see what's already been planted and how they grow...more patience.
I hate this waiting. The summer is passing by! I should be able to put stuff in the ground and it should grow!
But, it doesn't work that way. Ugh.
Anyway, further research makes me think the lilies I planted yesterday won't have a chance, eventhough I mixed top soil into the clay soil. I should have looked closer and realised maybe there was a reason (besides being pretty) there are so many daylilies in the area - they can handle clay soils.
Other people have picked up on and done the work - so I should stop trying to reinvent the wheel.
Read from these, learn, then maybe act.
1. Northern Shade Gardening pretty much has the exact information I need on what has worked in her Edmonton garden with similar shade as ours.
2. Rather than trying to stick lilies in clay, Examiner.com has ideas for what would work much better.
