Jackie has been really good about not doing chores while she's here. But as it was her last day, she gave in: We were going to get things done!
The lilac trees - you know, those ones that cast too much shade (as identified on day one) - were going to get trimmed.
With the bow saw (from Home Depot), on the step ladder (from Canadian Tire) we took turns "pulling" until the medium-sized branch (10 cm diameter?) fell. She looked at me excitedly, "Oh you..." and gave me a hug. She then said something to effect that she would never think of doing this herself. But why not? She's awesome (i.e. strong, smart, capable...). Um... unless she meant I was a bad influence, egging her on to do foolish and dangerous things...
Anyway, I didn't clarify, we were going to keep going! Jackie figured the best branch to take down would need to be guided first in one direction and then another so that it wouldn't tangle with the electric lines. Hm... how to do this? The bungee cords (from Michael from the move) came out. We wrapped the cords and again took turns "pulling" the saw through the branch.
Ugh, sawing's hard work. We made a dent and decided to call in the big guns. And, in what seemed like no time at all, Paul had cut through branch! The three of us directed it to the ground without hitting the lines. Victory!
We'd certainly worked up an appetite. The special meal Paul had prepared (Lancashire Hot Pot) was delicious.
We then capped off the night by watching The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. What a sweet movie.
