On Pets and other Animals
Pets and Babies: They both take up a lot of time and energy, cause lots of trouble. But in the end they're just so darn cute and lovable, that you end up... loving them. The lines blur so that people with their cats and/or dogs, are calling themselves "Mummy" or "Daddy". They take their pets on vacation, to psychiatrists, and many a time I'm fully convinced that they believe these animals are in fact children... And the wires in my brain cross, and I get a flash of light: People are having babies because they can't have pets! *pause, blink, blink* Hm... o.k. not all the brain cells were firing properly for that one.
Blame it on not getting enough sleep! Another eventful weekend starting with Friday Feast. Rem prepared homemade pizza with steamed Chinese dumplings. I recharged on the food and company. Chris has bought a car, and tries to get us to guess how much it's worth. None of us were that car savy, so he put it in terms we could understand: If this was chocolate, how much would it be worth? That kind of helped with estimations... and kind of didn't. :) Which lead to: ChocolateCarConversion.com... a website which doesn't exist (but someone should build it) However, when you type it into Google, it gets you an article about using chocolate as fuel... cool.
Couldn't stay too long I had to head to Ac... dang... Azucar (means "Sugar) for Yvonne's going away party / Hope Mission fundraiser. Rhianne, Brendan, Jackie, Clarence, and Nick went with me, but it was so loud and crowded that we didn't really had a chance to talk. There was a brief lesson where Nick laughed that I looked like a duck... and danced like a penguin. *crinkled nose* Hey at least I was trying!
Saturday went to the Fringe with Rem and Steph to catch Maggie Now. As predicted, this was a quality play, and it had me laughing and in tears. It was good crying. So now only have to wait a year to catch Part 2 of the story. Hung out by myself for a while, before heading over to Chianti's for Chrisitiana's going away party. An whole year in Ottawa for an internship (a.k.a. Slave Labour) - dance won't be the same without her pep-talks.
Sabine's birthday party was on a perfect Sunday. The sun was shining and it wasn't too hot - just the right weather for Nuclear War, and to be running around downtown Edmonton for a game of Scotland's Yard. Adapting the boardgame (it was a boardgame first... right?) into a live game worked since everyone had a cell phone. So, Detective Space Cadet (that would be me) was teamed with Detective Batman (Dexter - fit with Batman theme ringtone). We were in search of Agent Aqua (Rhonda) and Zoo (Vince), with Black Adder (Andrew) in charge of strategy. We all wore bright yellow "Caution" tape, and garnered plenty of strange looks. Not exactly comforting near the GreyHound station. Eventually all the Secret Agents were caught, and some of us called it a day.
Lidia has been working through lunch... so I should probably get back to work too. *Yawn* Now if only the sun will shine...

Going Swish
Lidia is back! Michael has a new baby boy! Susan's birthday meant an office lunch at New Aisan Village (they had whole wheat naan bread), and cake. And Pablo did a presentation / demonstration on how to drink Yerba Mate (which I thought would be good after my coffee ramblings... until I found out this has caffiene - though debatable - too). And so overall it's been a busy (and not very productive) work week.
Outside of work, lots of going-ons. I went to the Highlands Sidewalk sale with Catherine. Having only driven by the area, I didn't realise there were so many gems. At Swish I found out that paint-by-number is a collectors' item (who'd have thought?). Among the vintage furniture and houseware were clothing from another era. Catherine and I challenged each other mockingly by throwing down gauntlet style driving gloves. We squeezed past racks of old dresses and kimonos - I tried lifting a black velet cocktail dress that weighed at least 5 pounds - definitely a workout dress. Later on we visited Collectiv. The owner indulged me letting me take photos, even though he recognised they could have been used for industrial espionage :P We played with a posable Yoga Babar, and jumped when the plastic tube with a button on the side popped out a blade - it was a vegetable peeler. I hugged an Ugly Doll (which was actually kind of cute), and stared at all the pop art. Being inside the store just made me feel light hearted and happy... Now if they can bottle that up!
Also in the week: Caught up with the TC girls and got to see Charlotte's new house (super cool floor laminate that looks like tile). Visited the Fringe with Catherine and Jaclyn and saw "The Neo-Nancies: Hilter's Kick Team" by Guys in Disguise (if you enjoyed the Producers...) And yesterday Math United had our last game. Hm... no wonder I'm tired :)

Small Adventures
Trying new things is good, right? Dad decided to break the mould of going to Chinese restaurants for dinner to celebrate his birthday - and give Japanese food a try. The first time EVER! Not a big deal for most, but this is Dad. So I made reservations and told the family where to go. Jack and Jeff arrived from Calgary, and then we headed over to Kyoto downtown. And that's when things started to go wrong. Well... at least dad enjoyed the food. He and mom refused to eat anything raw, but Jack and Jeff (being the most experienced in this experience) ordered appropriate dishes to try. We might even do it again... and then I'd get to eat sushi! The kids who barely ate anything but white rice played with whatever cell phone they could get their hands on.
After dinner Jack, Jeff and I headed back to sister's to play with Kevin and Celina. Now who'd have thought that they were trained for Ma-Jong? Crazy. Mom (their grandma) would not be impressed. But we were having a blast. Who needs drugs? You just need people who have a little clue on how to play, and no clue how to win... and then watch the titles fly :P
Eventually we left (got kicked out), but J&J didn't want to go home. I thought: Hm... what are we going to get into this time? Remember last time Jeff was in town?
We didn't visit the strip clubs (I wasn't devestated). Rather we drove around the city, with my stomach at my throat. Why do people modify their cars so that they can be more annoying? New shocks on Jeff's car made it all feel like a rollercoaster ride. With the double sunroof and two spoilers I joked we were going to take flight (hm... that was funny in Chinese... um... right... *blush*) Seatbelts on, and then Zoom! All the while driving and eating, the insults fly between them. Definitely brothers.

Coffee ramblings On Dog Brushing and Zucchini
Partook in much too much coffee today and can feel my hands, head, brain, buzzing. Amid this noise came up with the realisation: Muffin racism exists. *blink, blink, twitch* This is one of the reasons why I should not drink coffee.
But I really needed it. There were a couple of late nights this week, and there were desserts at the meeting... hm... desserts and coffee *yum*
What I need to counter all this jittering energy is a dog... a dog to brush... a dog like Taiga. This has to be one of the most calming things to do... sitting on the grass next to a warm furry body, brush in one hand, and fingers on the other, running through long, soft, black and white hair, and thinking of nothing. Occassional looks to her face reveal, (not that I'm an expert), that she is relaxed and happy too. I end up with clothes covered in hair - but I also think I'm in love ;)
Brain has been again obsessed with food. First it's desserts, and then it's zucchini... I hear about zucchini chocolate cake, zucchini apple pie, zucchini eaten raw like cucumbers... tempted to just put zucchini on a stick over a fire to see what would happen (bet it would taste great with salsa :P). Hm... or in Gordon Korman's Zucchini Warriors - deep fried zucchini sticks... (How 'bout it Simony and Chris?). Dad whips up this zucchini soup with so many other ingredients, that I don't think you can really call it "zucchini soup" anymore. (Remember the story Stone Soup?) But it's so good, hm... *rubbing belly*
No Friday Feast this week, so should head home for more of that soup. Busy weekend ahead: Jack and Jeff are coming to town. All the nephews and nieces in the same room - Expect chaos to ensue.

Meandering
Feeling sick again, and I somehow hurt my back... not from acrobatics, unfortunately :P But there is good news: I got the callback to the TA core! That means it's time to get back to work - and get back in shape. This all corresponds nicely with our long awaited private lesson with Delphine. She's so busy now you have to book 3 weeks in advance! But it was worth it - she created a waltz routine for Darren and I that was very pretty. So pretty in fact she called it "Pink"... (um... not sure how I feel about that). And our cha-cha was so jazzed up that I could hardly keep my balance... *ha-ha nervous laugh* It's o.k. we have time to work on them. And would know it? There's the Wild Rose Ball competition in October... but I'm not sure if I'll be ready. And I really, really should get back on track with all that CGA stuff - time to dig through all my "nice and neat" piles of papers at home to figure out what classes I should take. And then use my brain!
I guess most people are getting back into that mode. The weather is starting to cool off a bit, its getting closer and closer to September, and school supplies are on sale. Only just started tracking things down from Celina and Kevin's supply list. It's mystifying in a way: do they really need 6 glue sticks of 21 grams, each? *eyes wide* That's a lot of glue. I get the feeling that the whole thing is a test (and dang it - it's mostly math!):
- Given that there are no 21 gram glue sticks available, how many of each of the assorted glue stick packs will you need to purchase? (... o.k. that's 126 grams... divided by...)
- Convert 5/6 inches to centimetres to find the correct line space ruling for scribblers
- True or False? Two coiled notebooks of 300 pages each will be essentially the same as 6 coiled note books of 100 each. (Surprisingly, I think the answer is false)
The weekend turned out to be o.k. despite not feeling so good and having to retreat home early each day. Friday had lunch with Val at Yokozuna on campus. Saturday, caught a bit of the Cariwest parade with Maria. Pirates of the Carribean was a popular theme (no surprise, right Jazzy?). So... we're in the Carribean... um... a slight stretch of the imagination while it hailed (!) - but it cleared up, and there were all the bright colours, feathers, sparkles...
Big breakthrough in staying at home: I had a talk with Mom... and I didn't yell. Hurrah! She revealed that she worries that I won't find someone... but would also worry if I did find someone *slapping forehead*... which is really par for course when it comes to our relationship. Well, one step at a time...
Happy Anniversary, Rem & Steph!

Mondo Beyondo
and thankfully not what D&D said in TA Tryouts… atleast not out loud.
The room smells like lillies *deep breath*. Tuesday morning - walk into my office not greeted by Lidia (she's on vacation now), but rather the vision of white lillies on the table. It kind of softens the blow of over 100 new emails, and various other pieces of mail in my inbox. Somewhere in all that correspondence was the annoucement that boss Michael got promoted! Yikes! No news as to who my new direct boss will be, but a little anxious. Michael is awesome afterall.
Behind with updating on the Melfort trip because it's been a very busy week. Went to Azucar for some salsa (Clarice's goodbye party), cleaned, played soccer with Math United, briefed an open mike night at the Druid (James Murdoch good, Robin Hunter... um... not so good... Andrew still to be seen), attended the final TA Tryout (got in trouble for doing illegal moves *blush*...), and watched the beginning of "Remo Williams" (nominated for an Oscar!). Oh, and there was work... :) Didn't realise that people would be writing to tell me to update.*big smile* Validation that people are reading! Thank you.
The days at work are passing by quickly. First have to catch up on stuff, and then learning about the Argentinian Health Care system through Pablo. Came about in an innocent way: his eye was hurting, and he said that he'll got to see a doctor afterwork. But much prefers doctors back at home. Hm... why? We were going to go very off topic from work...
The reason (paraphrased) was because of the wait time, and differences in bedside manner. In Argentina he could call a specialist directly and get an appointment (sometimes in the next day). Where here he would have to wait to see a general practioner, and then wait for this doctor to set up an appointment with a specialist... and the wait can be weeks. Hm... This got me very curious - unless it was an emergency, I can't see myself getting specialist attention that quickly (but then I'm still a Medicentre girl)... And he also cited having the cell number for his wife's doctor when she was pregnant, and calling their paediatrician at 4 a.m. when his daughter had a fever - the doctor had picked up. My jaw dropped. Then he said, the doctor's also took the time to build a relationship, with him as a patient - not the "You-have-a-virus-go-home-and-take-plenty-of-fluids. NEXT!" kind of treatment he was currently getting. I asked questions: Private or public? How many doctors per capita? I just couldn't reconcile in my head that he was getting better medical service in Argentina than in Canada. He said he couldn't believe it either. His answers by the way were: Private and public - and you could access either; and the highest number per capita. Ah! That may be a clue! I started talking about "brain drain" to the US, and how we had shortages of doctor's in Canada. And asked him why he thought there were more doctors in Argentina - he said because becoming a doctor was prestigious, and because (o.k. so it was a bit of leading by talking about "brain drain") doctors in Argentina couldn't practice in the US, Canada, or in most of Europe, and these were the places most Argentinians would want to immigrate to. With that note, I steered the conversation back to work.
(Hm... maybe the whole taking time to build a relationship also pertained to me... I just end up feeling guilty when we're not working, and instead talking about tango, and health care. )
Anyway, ended up looking for more information and found on the WHO site that there was no easy way to find a direct per capita comparison of healthcare professionals between Canada and Argentina (dang!). But there were articles on how in there is close to a 10 times difference in Argentina between urban (Bueno Aires) and rural areas. And yes, Pablo did live in the city. And thinking about it more... could the good relationship building mannerisms be an "Argentinian vs. Canadian" comfort difference, or be due to enough competition in the private sector that doctors needed to differentiate beyond specialization?
Argh. O.k. too complex to write or think more without more research. And I'm late.
One last note: Hope all the Folkies out there are keeping warm and dry. I know I'm missing out on Feist, Sarah Harmer, and other greats, but it looks like it'll still be busy weekend. There's the Cariwest parade at 12:30 downtown (look for Chris's scooter leading the way :P), and much needed sleep. Melfort update soon!

We're getting Splendid
They made me do it! No, not really. It seemed like a not too bad plan, and might actually "help" with the current situation. But I'm a little bit weary. I have joined the community of online dating. Half on whim, half on desperation, and some part with Anne at the controls :) I am feeling delighted and scared. All on par for a Friday Feast?
Rem brought us back to FF with a theme song! Roots Manuva's Cornmeal Dumpling... which Steph immediately commented - we better not be spitting on the bacon (see lyrics). Hm... maybe you had to be there? And I guess that would also be the rationale behind Chris and Simon's online research of escort services (there had to be some way for Simony to spend his boon of lucky money). In which Rem and Michael left indicating that they were heading out to a bachelor party in order to take part in some civilized conversation.
Malcolm asked where I was all week. He had been reading papers which conjured up entrophy daemons (gotta love math). I told him I was in Melfort, SK for the wedding that Steph and Rem attended (the draft of which is being written up and will be posted soon!)
More anxiety now about the situation. Will be fine I'm sure if I don't think about it. More cleaning for peace.
"Cornmeal Dumpling Give me strength y'all"
