Night Market Surprises

Ah!  After much house work, Paul needed to get out.

Celina and Theresa were going to a Chinese Night Market on the edge of China Town, so we stopped cleaning-tidying-cooking and met up with them.  It wasn't what either of us expected.

A cluster of open-sided tents were set up in a large parking.  Is that it?  Thought I knew it wouldn't be like Hong Kong's night market, I didn't think it would be so much smaller than the one on Canada Day.  But we came closer, things sort of improved.  I saw Bee!  She looked pretty much the same after all these years.  She has three kids now (one at home).  And... we had very little to say.

We found Celina and Theresa and looked around at the stalls. There was a food truck (Molly's Eats) and a stage for with pop performances... We looked at Asian-style clothing and (most authentic) T-shirst with misspelled English words.  Perky teenagers also tried to convince us to play a fortune sticks game.  Which made me wonder what exactly this was about (being ironic?)
It wasn't exactly an exciting scene for us, so Paul and I joined the China Town tour.  The group was small, but attentive.  We walked around the block and down the street, hearing about the the first grocer to carry Chinese goods, how certain buildings were architecturally influenced by Chinese design, how China Town was split down two different streets...

And then we walked to the other street... The tour didn't seemed to have an end!  What was originally sold as a 30 minute tour passed the hour mark and probably could have kept going.  I was mildly amused, but it turned out Paul was hoping to escape but had been too polite to leave when others peeled off...

Anyway, it got us walking.  I wish I took more notes.

Maybe it was our timing? Our Chinatown Edmonton seemed to have a much more fun time: http://www.ourchinatown.ca/2013/08/a-thousand-thousand-thank-yous.html
