Cultures at Play

"There's always an England... there's a song!"

But there was no England pavilion and we made sad faces.

This was all quickly remedied when the music and dancing started from all the pavilions that were there for the 38th annual Heritage Festival

The weather forecast of thirty percent chance of showers, and a thunderstorm watch (presumably with even more showers?), didn't deter us and didn't seem to have deterred others from attending.

Paul and I started our cross-culture tour a little differently this year -- counter clockwise!  We were greeted by giant mosquitoes (right) -- totally unnecessary given the abundance of regular-sized mosquitoes.

We lingered around Cambodia's stage, watching dancers perform with Angkor Thom as backdrop, and took pictures.

Overheard near the Nicaraguan stage: "That's a culture I can get behind."  Hm... I wonder if the shapely girls dancing in short skirts have anything to do with it...   Meanwhile, near the frozen banana stand (I figured Bluth's was never the original, but didn't suspected it for Peruvian culture!) Paul changes lenses.

We caught some "stern" dances from Croatia...

And then some joyful ones with the energetic dancers from Ghana.

With our appetites worked up, Paul decided to try one of their combination plates -- delicious grilled meat (sans stick)!
Next up was the Korean pavilion.  With colourful costumes, long ribbon hats, and dance formations, they were a fun bunch to photograph.  Paul and I stuck around for almost their entire set as the light changed with the sky clearing and clouding over again.

As we were leaving, we bumped into Wendy!  Her tour (with Will and others) will have a purpose: dinner.

More photos of the festival here.

Paul thought I should be proud he didn't hassle anyone at the festival as to "Who's the Doctor?"  We returned home and I was immediately on slug watch (six or seven the other night... another three... I've lost count).  He looked things up on online and was very happy with the choice.
